Subject: Unauthorized “Painting” (resurfacing) Helmet Shells & KMB 18 Frames

Products affected: All fiberglass helmets / KMB 18 BandMasks.

Complete re-gelcoating of Kirby Morgan fiberglass helmet shells & KMB 18 frames MUST be done by a Kirby Morgan factory trained & approved facility only, or by Kirby Morgan.

The major reasons for this are:

  • Damages can be hidden from view by those who re-coat the part but are not qualified to first inspect for damages.
  • Critical areas such as O-ring sealing surfaces can be easily compromised by untrained individuals.
  • Proper inspection of the part is no longer possible when surfaces are covered.
  • Kirby Morgan cannot guarantee the part, or work performed on the part, when done by anunauthorized party.

For the reasons above, Kirby Morgan, along with its representatives, will not perform work on fiberglass helmet shells or KMB 18 frames with unauthorized re-gelcoats or re-surfacings. These shells and frames are unserviceable and will be condemned.

Note: Please be aware that if the unit is 20 years or older, it may not be eligible for a complete, cosmetic re-gelcoat. However, functional repairs may still be an option. Also, please be aware that three is the maximum number of times a shell or frame may be re-gelcoated.

For those customers that feel they must have a custom, decorative design painted or gelcoated ontotheir helmet shell (or frame): This is NOT recommended!

Do not compromise the quality or serviceability of your Kirby Morgan life support equipment.

Thank you.
